Songwriting with Cubase, Reason

Originally on TEAC A3340 with Roland SH101, Jen SX1000 and Boss DR110 drum machine.

Then onto (gulp) Atari ST with Steinberg Pro-24, SMP24 SMPTE generator, controlling a 64 way MIDI patchbay, and rack loads of synths (Yamaha DX9, TX802, TX81Z, Roland D550, Korg EX800, Sequential 6trak, Ensoniq ESQ1), samplers (Emu Emax, Ensoniq Mirage DSK8/DMS8), drums (Simmons SDS9, Sequential Drumtraks), outboard gear (Aphex Aural Exciter, Korg DSP, Alesis Midifex/Midiverb, Symetrix Compressor, DBX Noise Reduction) and lovely recording kit (Tascam 38, Tannoy Little Reds, Neumann U87).

Now back to a simpler setup, largely PC based so (in theory) I can concentrate on the songs rather than the plumbing!

comment How do I fix the latency issue when recording through M-AUDIO Fast Track Pro USB Audio Interface?
@horatio, I'm not sure!! My comment was based on experience with a different M-Audio card and Cubase, whereby changes in card parameters affecting latency were not allowed when Cubase was in use (unless Cubase's "release in background" option was set). However, for my setup I was able to change the card settings freely when Cubase wasn't running, even though it was the system default.

some audio interfaces wont allow the value to be adjusted if the device is in use. Are you using it with particular recording software/DAW?

comment Is buying a compressor a good thing for vocal recording?
Thanks, I suppose the kit & techniques in using them are applicable to many styles, especially where you've quite a range to cover (e.g. metal through acoustic) ... anyway, [this question] (avp.stackexchange.com/q/1705/741) on HM Vocals, may be worth a peek too.

It might be useful to clarify what type of vocal recording you're doing (assuming "pop" but could be spoken, choral, heavy rock). Meanwhile, its going to be hard to be prescriptive ... but this question discusses the priorities for vocal recordings; and this question touches on the hardware vs software debate.
