Enthusiastic amateur - worked as a presales engineer for a Silicon Graphics company back in the day, so did a fair bit of animation with Alias Wavefront, then Maya.

Still do video editing on various platforms, as well as sound editing.

Sonar and Cubase are my preferred audio platforms.

Yeah, diodes clip in a very harsh way, which is why they are often used in simple fuzz circuits. You couldn't do it like this unfortunately.

Have a search on 8-bit sounds/music or chiptune music - you may find what you need there. The sounds were constrained by the hardware/software of the time, so using emulators of that setup will lead to the effects you describe.
