Graduate level software engineer with a love for guitar, and have played for many years. I never made it big in the music space, but I have lent my "skills" for a couple of studio sessions for some friends. Now instead of concentrating on "making it" I enjoy writing and recording the music that is my passion. I have an abnormal obsession with gear of all kinds, and I have spent a couple of years tweaking what I have until it sounds exactly the way I want it to :D.
I've also built my own amps/pedals/guitars, and heavily modified the stock one's I own. I'm an electrical engineering nerd--although I don't think I could handle it as a profession--I still find the physical properties of guitars/amps/effects fascinating. You can find me on twitter at the address below.

What is the best way to record Electric Guitar on heavy distortion? No worries man, I'm not trying to be abrasive :D. I was just thinking through what most professional production houses do (at least the one's I have worked with) and line-in is usually only useful for a dry mix track. What you described is great for home use, but I don't think it's the right answer. Would remove the down vote but I can't anymore. |

What is the best way to record Electric Guitar on heavy distortion? Suggested edit: "Some people also mic the back of the cab for extra bass" Depends on if you have an open backed or closed back cabinet. |

What is the best way to record Electric Guitar on heavy distortion? Condensers will certainly get you more clarity here. The SM-57 is middy by definition. |

What is the best way to record Electric Guitar on heavy distortion? Line out's cannot reproduce the physical properties of an actual speaker cabinet--and speaker emulators don't really get you 100% there either. |

Effects LEDs are uncomfortably bright - can they be dimmed? (Boss ME-70) You can also take some 400+ grit sandpaper and rough up the plastic a little. It will refract the light slightly and cause it to go dim. |

Scratchy volume pot +1 for DeOxit. Great for cleaning guitar/amp/vintage pedal pots too. |

What is the best way to record Electric Guitar on heavy distortion? Guitar, pickup configuration (active vs passive), pedal configuration, and amplifier settings are also very pertinent to answering this question correctly. Does the amplifier sound good in the room before you record it? |
