Is Garage Band a viable tool for home recording? Last time I checked, you could put a limited number of effects on the master bus. |

Appropriate background music for a webapp screencast I wouldn't put KISS on a screencast. |

Will a magnetically shielded studio monitor mess up my hard drive? Fascinating! My dad must have learned that from having floppies - so I was still cautious sitting my hard drive enclosures on top of my speakers. But what about vibrations - shaking the drive off or messing with the heads...hmmm. |

How do I match a microphone to a preamp Brilliant - exactly what I was after! |

How do I match a microphone to a preamp Again, I'm looking for concrete rules on how the gain relates to sensitivity. More is better when the gain on the preamp is low, but is there a way to avoid - "Oh...shouldn't have bought this mic, my preamps can't power it, now I'm going to have to drop $500 on a preamp", instead of waiting until after you get the mic and then have to sell it or get a new preamp. As much as artists like to think this is all art, there is science happening in the background. |

How do I match a microphone to a preamp @Bob - The fathead and presonus digimax. Recording quiet sounds and it needs to be cranked - cranking means hissing. SM57 needs gain for doing acoustic guitar. Got a 75db preamp and they both sound great without noise from the pre. |

Difference between 3.5mm and quarter inch plug? I don't think apple would find it funny - it would take up too much space inside the device - which is why the mini plug is created. If you look inside some of your electronic, check out the volume which is taken up by each jack. The 1/4" is huge, whereas the mini takes up much less space. Why can't they all just use bluetooth? ;) |

Individual performing complete band performance (eg rock) by sequentially recording each instrument @Neil Very true. Depends on the player as well - I find a click track will help some drummers. |

How to achieve best sound in MIDI playback Nice - I haven't used one for 10 years, so I'm probably a bit out of what's going on these days. Maybe they even sampled back then - doubtful though, due to the cost of memory. As soon as I found out about all this midi stuff I started plotting to buy an alesis micro synth module - then a roland jv-1010 - then onto plugins. Recently the native instruments komplete package - loving the Komplete sampler and all the instruments it comes with. |

How do I mic a violin? One of my two tries at violin was pretty harsh - I second that advice - make sure it doesn't hurt the ears. I guess the player can help with that too. |

How can I clean up my laptop's sound card input? Coming from IBM PCs I was impressed by the mac audio inputs. I could get a usable signal into the computer without hard drive noise and nasty buzzing. Just took a little $50 behringer mixer and a rca to mini plug. |

Dubstep Whomp's on logic express 9? I'd probably go with the ES2 to do this in logic express. |

Single-mic close-miked solution for acoustic guitar? @sims- what is the background noise? Also, what preamp are you using? |

How early, how often do I need to mix-down? Do you just mean mixing? Mixing down normally means bouncing to stereo - also known as exporting. |

Easy to use open source DAW? Also, check out Harrison Mixbus. It's based on Ardour and is $79 for the time being. I thought it was pretty cool. |
