Sound engineer tech based in London. Started a career very young doing Live sound on the road, touring with bands as FoH or stage tech, later progressed with studies in Cinema and later on Sound Engineering and Recording Arts.

Currently, managing studios in an educational institute pays the bills, but all the spare time is spent watching movies, recording bands, editing in ProTools or with the head stuck in a videogame.

comment General rules for panning?
We can't determine the direction of low frequencies, so the bass is often placed at the center of the mix. Panning the bass hard to either side would especially be noticeable by headphone listeners, and potentially very distracting unless that's the effect you're going for.
aren't you contradicting yourself a bit here? Indeed, low frequencies and very high frequencies are harder to pinpoint but if they harder to pinpoint they shouldn't be distracting then. You are probably referring to the fact low frequencies are more "powerful" acoustically.

comment Are outboard processors dead?
you never added blanking panels between units that overheat or even 2u blanking panels for the same reason? I wired many studios where I even implemented them for nothing more than easier access when the cabinets are put against the wall. Other than that I agree with pretty much the whole of your post but I must add that for some units haven't found the same behaviour in itb processing

comment How are vocals and other different tracks separated from a mix?
Not the master, but it is a common practice to bounce several mixes at mixing stage. I mixed a couple of bands before that needed TV versions and etc, and recently had to remix a track to be used in an add where they asked simply for things to be taken out. These often get leaked. But it is also often that labels do ask you to M-S to try and rip off the vocals or take vocals off when they are pressed for time.

Tried to look for that exact model and NADA (there's a hd558 etc) but I did find it on google (bit weird...). From what I can see it's a "surround" headphone now I'm not sure of something: was the original trs 1/8" 4 pin one or is the surround driver just a simple ABR design?

comment Reducing breath noise
Now that I think about it, maybe vocal rider is not such a great idea but DeBreath could do the trick if you don't want to go the manual route

comment Melodyne nightmare
ahh, yes... both 44.1k and 48khz. One is a indie band project that I didn't dream having to be doing this kind of editing and the other is a more serious project where I knew extensive amounts of beat detective, elastic audio and melodyne would be in order.

cubase also has a similar feature. Remember seeing it in Cubase 3 or 4. when you press enter that screen pops up with the waveform/region exploded and there was a tool there to do it.
