I wear many hats at my workplace.

Primarily a Database Developer, but also programmer, web designer, DBA, sysadmin, and general office bitch.

I work for a small custom software house in Sydney, Australia. We use all manner of tools - but mainly MSSQL and a Rapid Application Tool called eDeveloper uniPaaS Magic XPA.

comment Neutrik XLR 1/4" Combo Jacks and Phantom Power
+1 - the only equipment I've ever seen damaged by phantom power are oldschool ribbon mic's.

comment Linux digital recording - Audacity or Ardour?
@endolith - all good, I'm not the one that's going to have to use it every week :)

comment CAT5 UTP for Audio?
Not really an answer, but we once had an analogue building PA system that we needed to extend to a new part of a building that they didn't run the wires to. We wired CAT5 and RJ45 with a stereo 3.5mm plug and patched it through the networking cabling. It worked fine, but we're talking about a building PA system, not high fidelity ;)

@endolith - No Money: Check. Idealism: Check (it is a church, after all). Not a professional: Check.

comment What is compression and why is it used?
To be fair, asking "what is compression" has two very valid answers when talking about audio recordings. This is a valid answer to that question.

comment How to recognize if Auto-Tune has been used in a recording? Is it needed?
+1 - I don't know if Kanye West has ever done a song without Autotune, and he uses it poorly

Thanks. I like the look of it, I'll give it a go.

comment Are outboard processors dead?
+1 - I've seen studios that must have had 100RU of gear, most of which I suspect is plugged into power, but nothing else.

comment FireWire or USB
@Joel - then Firewire 800 was released, and then USB 3.0 came out - it's the same story in everything IT related where there's two competing technologies ;)

comment Is there still any reliability gap between digital and analog mixers
Most decent UPS's do power filtering by their very nature (by providing power from their batteries, not direct from the source)

comment Digital Effects Unit
@Will - I've asked a few questions like that already and I kept getting localised answers. I figured I may as well just ask what i want to know. Also, if I were to ask "Whats the downside of a unit from 1990" then that's the same question, worded so it doens't go out of date.

comment FireWire or USB
@Andrew - not always possible if for whatever reason you're using a laptop (like the op), or borrowing someone elses's DAW

Is that noise issue something that's related to the age of the device, or just the Midiverb in general?

comment DIY Digital recording studio
+1 - I actually already have a studio, was just asking as a general "seeding" question - but great answer!

comment All-round vocal mic
Updated question. Ultimately just a general list of qualities to look for and how important each quality is, and I guess as the budget scales we can start adding more "features" in per mic.
