I'm a senior Computer Science/Audio Engineering Technology major at Belmont University. My general hobbies include programming, electronics, and music. Long term electronics project would be a fully analog synth, since I just so happen to be a keys a player and a synth enthusiast. Mostly here to learn but would love to soon know enough to be able to help.

Is this audio signal path enough/correct? What DAW/recording software are you using? That's something you left of the list that you'll probably need. |

Microphone recommendation for solo trombone recordings I haven't really tried the FatHeads without a good preamp, but as long as you have something that will get enough gain you should be fine. There are several questions about miking into a computer around here. And if you don't find one that answers what you want, feel free to ask more questions. Same for flute question, it's better asked as a question than hidden in the comments. |

Microphone recommendation for solo trombone recordings I'm not sure why the down vote. The question is well formed and the subject matter is on topic. |

recording with Shure SM7B is surprisingly quiet Just the FetHead with phantom between the pre and the dynamic would work. The same thing wouldn't work if you were using a condenser instead of a dynamic, unless you had some other source of power besides phantom to the dynamic mic. |

recording with Shure SM7B is surprisingly quiet The FetHead is essentially a preamp that runs off phantom power that provides a 20 dB boost of fixed gain. It won't work with condensers, but should be fine for any dynamic mics. |

recording with Shure SM7B is surprisingly quiet 110 dBre20µPa may be fine if you're putting the mic up to a cab and blasting it, but to capture something with more dynamic range like vocals, you want to be able to get a decent track volume at 80 or even 60 dB. I wasn't implying that the microphones max volume was dictated by the output level. However, my target gain for recorded tracks is around -12dB on the meters. To get this, my preamp needs around 50 dB of clean makeup gain, which I wouldn't really expect to get from the last 10-15% of a <$300 pre. |

Templates for video production? This is entirely a sales pitch, and probably not good for the community unless you can better explain why your services are what the OP needs. |

What's the difference between dynamic and condensor microphones? Hopefully the new and improved microphone tag wiki (avp.stackexchange.com/tags/microphone/info) reflects all the information in this thread, plus a little more of my own. (Once it gets approved, of course.) |

Want to Start 2D 3D Animation Studio I may be way off in my assumption, but it would seem like someone going into animation could also profit by checking out the video game development SE. This question seems perfectly on topic here, but you might be able to pick up some tips over there as well. gamedev.stackexchange.com |

What's the difference between dynamic and condensor microphones? Really, I was thinking more along sub-divisions such as diaphragm and ribbon being subsets of dynamic mics, but pickup patters are a reasonable dividing line. Most microphones of a similar transduction device tend to have similar sets of pickup patterns though. |

microphone for recording naturally occuring random noises As to the shock mount, it mostly helps to reduce noise traveling through the stand and makes it so slight movements of the stand effect the sound less. |

microphone for recording naturally occuring random noises SM7B is a dynamic, and one with a fairly low output gain, so it's really not that suitable for area effects. It's much better for focused sounds (mostly vocals, but I've seen it on snare and kick as well). It's a little pricy to pick up on top of the SM7B, but the mic i was thinking about for #4 was an Audix TM1. They run about $300. The Behringer ECM8000 is similar, much cheaper, and I can't give a quality review for it, so you'd need to do your own research. For #2 you're looking at something more like an Audio-Technica AT2050. |

Cardboard boxes for room echo reduction? You could fill the boxes with something like sheets or packing peanuts and stack them in the corner to make a pretty effective bass trap. That said, that won't solve the echo problem. |

starting an effects rack, but not sure where to start or if needed Those are definitely solid for a beginning level. Remember that your mic locker and your speakers are an important part of your setup as well, so listing them will make gear questions easier. If you're planning on recording vocals, especially male, I suggest checking out the Shure SM-7. It's great for less acoustically treated environments since it has great isolation, and it's one of the best sounding mics for male vocals in existence. Very reasonable price tag as well. |

starting an effects rack, but not sure where to start or if needed I would go with a good pair of speakers and good headphones if you plan on doing both. They will benefit you the most in the long run. As long as I had decent compression plugins, I wouldn't worry about buying an outboard compressor unless it was something like a LA-2A, 1176, or a Fairchild (all $1500+ comps). The only other reason I can think of would be if you were doing mastering, and there's a lot more to invest in before that's an option. |

How to protect an amplifier from blowing an internal fuse Sounds like a power conditioner would help. It'll keep the voltage level despite spikes or sags, and it will trip before your gear does. It's a good investment anyway since so many venues have things like freezers or air conditioners hooked up to the same circuits as their stages, which can actually be heard in your amp. |

Does having a long 3.5mm cable degrade audio quality? @TravisDtfsuCrum No problems, just figured it would be good information to get somewhere onto the question for anyone else looking at it. |

Can anybody help me get rid of the static from my compressor? What does your signal chain look like? Are you going Mic->Comp->Mixer->Recorder->Playback or Mic->Mixer->Recorder->Compressor->Playback? |

Does having a long 3.5mm cable degrade audio quality? @TravisDtfsuCrum Phantom power isn't necessary unless he's using a condenser microphone or a DI that requires phantom power. |
