I guess I should be more clear about the setup I'm thinking of. From what I read, leftaroundabout, you use a more hardware-based setup, with most of your effects being applied to the analogue signal before it hits the interface. I don't have any hardware effects or compressors, so monitoring has everything to do with the software if I want to hear my instrument with effects.

To sync the audio to the video, you want to have an even that is able to be precisely identified by both the sound and the video. A nice hand clap works well. I've done this with great success.

Yes, you can connect those right to the DAC without anything in between.
