In what units is a sample's amplitude value represented, and how it relates to the real world? Sort answer: the real world isn't digital, so no there is essentially no relation. Even shorter answer: don't do math, make music. |

Can someone explain 'phase' and related terminology in audio production? @user1167442 I'd say so. Were you should be concerned with phase cancelation is with mono compatibility of your mixes. Its a good idea to always check your mixes in mono. If you hear any phase cancelation when you sum to mono, you know that you have some sort of phase issue with your mix and this will most likely result in issues with translating your mixes to other playback systems. |

Can someone explain 'phase' and related terminology in audio production? @user1167442 Glad I could help. The text book example of where phase inversion solves a common problem is when you record an instrument with a DI and a mic. Because sound travels relatively slowly through the air, compared to how fast electrical impulses travel through wire/ circuits, etc. the signal recorded via the microphone will often be out of phase with the DI, as it will be delayed by a few milliseconds. Flipping the phase may solve the phase cancelation, but aligning the two tracks in a DAW is often a better solution. |

Can someone explain 'phase' and related terminology in audio production? Well sort of. What I really meant was try inverting the phase of one, then the other, but not both at the same time. |

How can I compress my bassline like the linked Boris Brejcha track? Thanks. I think it is important to think about the math when trying to do something like this with compression. It helps you visualize what you're trying to accomplish. What it doesn't do is provide you with a formula on how to do it. |

Is it possible to create a master quality recording of acoustic guitar/vocal with an iPad? A digital to analog converter (D/A for short) converts digital audio information to analog audio that can be reproduced by amplifiers and speakers. Not all D/As are created equal, and the one in the zoom is pretty middle of the road as far as quality is concerned. A higher quality D/A will distort the sound less and reproduce a stronger stereo image, which gives you a more accurate sound. |

How do I capture or create first-person audio? I'd be careful of recording dialog in stereo, especially via binaural. Recording the mouth and throat via stereo peizos, separate from recording the vocals, is probably a great idea. Put it all in the dullest smallest room reverb patch you can find, and set the reverb's wet to dry to uncomfortably wet, without any slap-back noises. Also try low passing to the dialog and the reverb return, but not the throat and mouth noises, as well as trying a not so great mic for recording the dialog. |

What equipment should I use for recording conference audio? Something like the ART SplitCom would work just fine and costs less then $50. I would advise disabling the cameras built in mic to avoid echo and/ or phasing issues. |

Is this audio signal path enough/correct? Can you tell us which of these pieces of equipment you already own? This setup will work and is a pretty good choice. There may or may not be better options, but if you already have some part of it, like say the computer, alternative suggestions are kind of silly? Also have you considered the room you are going to record in? That is a much more important factor than the gear you are using. |

Is this audio signal path enough/correct? Why are you recommending a M-Audio interface over the Apogee? The Apogee isn't the greatest in the world but it's worlds ahead of the M-Audio stuff. Also for an inexperienced engineer, don't you think trying to do it in stereo opens up a world of potential phase problems? Why not keep it simple with a nice ribbon mic, which the Cascade is, 3-6 feet away? |

Does hardware DSP help with plugin processing? Made last paragraph more specific. Made it clear that systems like UA UAD only work with their proprietary plugins. |
