comment Are there any audible differences between 192 and 320 kbit/s .mp3 files?
I did do a sort of blind test with classical music, on a pair of Genelec 1030 loudspeakers. We listened to one piece, in which every minute the bitrate changed. We knew beforehand which qualities were available (varying from Stereo MP3 96kbps to full 16 bits 44k1 PCM) and we had to determine the order. We did the test with 6 professional engineers, all of which were able to put a lesser quality on the 192kbps than on the 320kbps. While not as reliable as a double blind test, it really suggests there is an audible difference.

@TravisDtfsuCrum Did you read Andrew's comment and have a look at the history of this answer? You'll see that Andrew changed "mix" to 'master candidate' after I wrote my comment. Don't get me wrong, I totally agree that you should listen to your song at all available systems, but not during the mixing stage. (Which was the stretch of what the initial answer was.) My point was just that you should not do this while mixing, because in general (and there are always exceptions) the mixing desk is wrong place to fix sound/balance issues caught on your car speakers.

I agree, but since they clearly state that if you decide to pay nothing, you get a limited demo version of the product, I would call this an expectation rather than an encouragement.

comment What is a good mastering chain to use in a DAW?
"Linear phase dynamics" is ambiguous, do you specifically refer to multiband dynamics by calling it 'linear phase'? As far as I know, full one-band dynamics are always linear phase. (They only increase/decrease signal level.)

oZone still allows you to change the order of blocks in the chain, and therefore only mentioning the plugin is hardly an answer to any of the original questions. I do agree though, oZone is great, T-Racks is good, and Wave Arts FinalPlug is good as well if what you need is only a limiter and a dithering plug-in.

comment How to record one or several celli?
Well, I never used them personally, so I might be wrong about this, but in general, I think these type of microphones are used for very close mic-ing because of their characteristcs. (As you mention: putting them on the instrument is basically as close as you can get.) Close mic-ing (i.e. putting the microphone very close to the instrument) is not recommendable for chamber music, as one wants it to sound like natural, acoustical instruments. Part of the music is the acoustics of the room where they were played.

What do you refer to as 'classical microphone'?

+1 for linking to the website of Eberhard Sengpiel. (And of course for a very good answer.)

I respectfully disagree (probably due to terminology here): during the mixing stage, one should only listen to his studio monitors (and incidentally a pair of good headphones to get a better idea of reverberation, acoustics and noise, but really not to get an impression of the mix); doing otherwise is something I consider a mistake myself. The task of making it sound well on other speaker systems should not be taken care of during mixing, but during mastering. (i.e. after the mixing is done.) And during mastering, the mix should not be changed to solve these issues.

Closed. This question is merely about extracting audio from flash applets rather than importing it in your DAW.

No it doesn't, there is always denemo which lacks a few features but gets the job done.

I agree with the last statement, crosstalk is not evil. Rather try getting the kind of sound you want that fits with the music.

The short version: Among others, sensitivity is the most interesting thing to look at. It is displayed in mV/Pa. More mV/Pa means more sensitive mic, means stronger signal.

So, 10-12 different people, recorded simultaneously multiple times (so you end up with a lot more voices). Then, a non co-incident system (e.g. ORTF or AB) will do fine. If any doubt, put an XY up as well, and compare the results. You can safely do panning in an XY, since the capsules are (almost) at the same place, so no comb filter effect will happen.

comment Equipment: new interface necessary or not? (Using Mackie 402-VLZ3 with 2010 iMac)
Pretty much the entire answer. Getting rid of Behringer stuff is never a bad idea anyway, because although it does sound a lot better than your intel MBP sound, IMO it is still to noisy to be useful. Have a look at the brands Presonus, M-Audio (ProFire stuff) and Focusrite, they all have relatively affordable interfaces with quite a good quality for the price.

+1 for mentioning Wave Arts Panorama. (with which I am in no way affiliated, it's just a darn good plugin).
