The most common mistakes for newbies recording Being too inscecure about yourself is a very important thing, but I respectfully disagree with most of the rest of these items. Recording is - in my opinion - although very art-related and a very creative process - definitely a craft rather than an art, where a matter of quality is definitely present and should be taken into account. Remember we are talking professional audio. Of course you should both spend time here as well as in your musical environment, these are both places of good inspiration. |

How to mic a 50 persons choir standing behind an orchestra Just for the sake of completeness, unlike XY, ORTF is a non-coincident system, since there is a spatial difference of 17cm between the mics in ORTF. You probably just meant "stereo pair" in general. |

How to mic a 50 persons choir standing behind an orchestra I agree on everything you write, (I tried it with MK21s once, and the sound was reasonable - I think I just don't like the sound of Schoeps but that's a different story. Never tried the 4015s.) though I always end up with a signal that is not capable of fixing the balance with the hard brass and the percussion. Especially when these instruments are playing very loud while the choir sings, I want to cover up for the psychological effect of distinguishing when you see it by slightly altering the balance (without shattering the depth perspective). I need a relatively isolated signal for that... |

Adding 'sparkle' to an a cappella choir recording When using vocals - and purely vocals - I tend to make a small exception to this rule, adding just a little bit of 3Khz and/or 8KHz can be a huge improvement to the intelligibility of the vocal sound. |

Adding 'sparkle' to an a cappella choir recording "Sparkle" is quite an ambiguous term. While I understand the issue exactly is the fact that you don't know what it is that creates the sparkle, try to find a way to share with us what you mean by it a bit more in detail. How would you describe the sound of your recording after you listened to the reference recording? |

Should I use 44.1KHz, 48KHz or 96KHZ sampling frequency for hobby projects? After some blind testing we did during my education (a few years back) I have good reason to stand behind my point, while I never found a moment where I actually heard a difference in an A-B comparison, nor did anyone of the subjects. Still, these are experiences, and they might be not enough to give an objective answer to this question. My point would rather be: "Hey, look, I am somebody who has the feeling it makes a difference. Try my story to find out for yourself." In professional audio, (as I stated elsewhere) never think something is the way to go because somebody else says so. |
