Are there any audible differences between 192 and 320 kbit/s .mp3 files? I did do a sort of blind test with classical music, on a pair of Genelec 1030 loudspeakers. We listened to one piece, in which every minute the bitrate changed. We knew beforehand which qualities were available (varying from Stereo MP3 96kbps to full 16 bits 44k1 PCM) and we had to determine the order. We did the test with 6 professional engineers, all of which were able to put a lesser quality on the 192kbps than on the 320kbps. While not as reliable as a double blind test, it really suggests there is an audible difference. |

The most common mistakes for newbies recording @TravisDtfsuCrum Did you read Andrew's comment and have a look at the history of this answer? You'll see that Andrew changed "mix" to 'master candidate' after I wrote my comment. Don't get me wrong, I totally agree that you should listen to your song at all available systems, but not during the mixing stage. (Which was the stretch of what the initial answer was.) My point was just that you should not do this while mixing, because in general (and there are always exceptions) the mixing desk is wrong place to fix sound/balance issues caught on your car speakers. |

An open source sound editor, but not Audacity? I agree, but since they clearly state that if you decide to pay nothing, you get a limited demo version of the product, I would call this an expectation rather than an encouragement. |

What is a good mastering chain to use in a DAW? "Linear phase dynamics" is ambiguous, do you specifically refer to multiband dynamics by calling it 'linear phase'? As far as I know, full one-band dynamics are always linear phase. (They only increase/decrease signal level.) |

What is a good mastering chain to use in a DAW? oZone still allows you to change the order of blocks in the chain, and therefore only mentioning the plugin is hardly an answer to any of the original questions. I do agree though, oZone is great, T-Racks is good, and Wave Arts FinalPlug is good as well if what you need is only a limiter and a dithering plug-in. |
