Open-source alternatives for plug-ins. Well as long as it's published and can be used for free I don't see the problem. |

Tape for labeling gear with a marker? It dries out and the glue then sticks on. Yeah, it takes a year or so, but still. :) I've used it, wouldn't recommend it. |

What do various sounds look like on the wave spectrum To develop a visual understanding of it, you need to see it. There are modular synthesizer softwares who have "oscilloscope" modules where you can see what the sound looks like. Look for that. :) Barring that, use Audacity (audacity.sourceforge.net) to look at and modify audio files. |

choosing gear and set up for recording live 16ch same time @sims: In theory, at least. But I've checked and the 1010LT sound has no discernible artifacts like that. There is some noise, yes, but that's ordinary white noise. It seems it blocks out any digital interference. My card is located last, meaning that the nearest card is on the "backside" of the 1010LT card, which is then being shielded by the earth-plane. Having say a graphics card on the other side might make a difference. That said the 1010 may very well have less of the white noise as well. :-) |

PC Surround Sound ports and SPDIF? It should be migrated to superuser.com, I think. |

Recommendations for good “bad monitors”? @Evan: There is no need to be rude just because you don't understand the question. |

How can I make “videosongs”? Why would you need a multi-camera setup? |

Why is Pro Tools the industry standard in high end audio production? Great answer! But make no mistake about it: Become the industry standard, and you no longer have to remain the best to remain the standard. Do studios investigate every possible alternative with a fine-tooth comb? Of course. But with every alternative they have to ask the question "Is this so much better that we will buy it even though most of our customers want pro tools?" That's the question that they are asking. Not "Is it better than Pro Tools" but "Is it THAT much better". It's not enough to just be better to make inroads. You must be WAY, WAY better. |

How can I make “videosongs”? Uhm. You film yourself recording, and then you edit that into a video. It's unclear what the question is. |

Sample-accurate AIFF to WAV conversion on Mac OSX @Warrior Bob: Of course it would have the same audio data. It's an editor, it only changes what you tell it to change. And you asked this in the question, I wouldn't have said Audacity unless it fulfilled your requirements. |

choosing gear and set up for recording live 16ch same time @vagx: I updated the answer with regards to the "hardwired". I don't know Allen & Heath, but I've never heard anything bad about them, so they probably will do well. And 32 channels is nice. I personally have no use for more than 24. Loads of ins/outs for a PC is evidently quite expensive. I'm slightly surprised the prices hasn't come down I must say. Making an AD/DA isn't that hard. |

Triggers on drums in the studio, why? Yeah +1. My guess is that he used triggers out of pure lazyness for the above reasons. |

Urgent: Micing a kick drum with a large diaphragm condenser? Not a real answer, so: I did in a pinch use a crappy old vocal mic for a kick, and it worked fine. You aren't likely to get a good crisp "click" with it, but rather a "doommf", but hey, it's better than no kick. :) Maybe it suits the style, I never recorded a hardcore band. :) |

How to record the sound of an acoustic guitar with a magnetic pickup? @Ian C.: Very good point. In any case, I started a discussion on merging, as there is already such a discussion on guitars.SE. meta.audio.stackexchange.com/questions/104/… |

Where did the 3:1 rule come from? Right, the 3:1 rule is not about stereo, but using multiple microphones in general. In stereo recording you generally will see each stereo pair as one source in this case. |

What is the best volume to work with studio monitors? This is probably more true for mastering than mixing, though. Mixing takes longer, and your ears will get tired on that volume. And you need to make sure it sounds good on all volumes. |

What is the best volume to work with studio monitors? Yes, I both change volume and monitors when mixing as well. Avoids fatigue and lets you hear the music on different levels and different types of monitors. |
