I work as a Systems Administrator and a Technical Consultant to the Helpdesk for the EECS (Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences) Department at the University of California, Berkeley Campus. This has been my career for the last 24 years which began as an electronics technician. I worked my way to principal electronic tech and then crossed over to systems administration about 12 years ago. My strongest experience is with computer hardware and I am usually the go to guy when laptops and desktops start smoken or won't power up.
One of my most interesting assignments at Berkeley was in 1992. I was put on a special team with NASA trained techs to fabricate an assembly bound for the Arecibo radio telescope. This was a special 4 million FFT based spectrum analyzer for SETI project SERENDIP III under the direction of UC Berkeley physicist Dan Werthimer. I got to build hardware to listen for ET!
In my off hours since 1977 I have been working with music, still photography, and small scale sculptures some involving digital electronics. However in 2008 after a 35 year hiatus I have returned to my own independent cinematic (video) and music productions.
Presently I use a Sony camcorder (HDR-CX500v) and I use Sony Vegas Pro 10 as my main video and music editing suite. I have experience with both Windows Movie Maker and Windows Live Movie Maker, and I am a tiny bit familiar with iMovie. I also have a B.S. in Cinematography from SIU-Carbondale, 1974 and a M.F.A. in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College, 1977.

What are the minimum camera characteristics required to record a movie for cinema? I am not clear on what you are asking. Are you interested in recording a projection of a video with another camera? If so why not just make a copy of the the material being projected? |

Video clip is smaller dimensions than project. How to change the color of extra space? I should have picked that up with the tag. Sorry, I don't use FCPX, but in most pro editors you could try masking out the bars, or have you tried reversing the top vs. bottom layer, then mask the upper layer to only allow what you want to show over the bottom layer. |

What is/are the best free tool/tools for editing my videos? Craig, it might be time to get yourself a camera that shoots in HD from the start. (That is if I understand this situation correctly). You're gonna save so much time getting it right from the start that it will probably pay for the new camera. There are plenty of point and shoot pocket cameras that can shoot both 720p and 1080p for under $500 but you will not get the manual controls until you spend about 50% more. |

Compose music in Reason, synced up to a project in Premiere Vegas Pro allows to have simultaneous multiple sound and video tracks to sync. But this is the same NLE, haven't heard of 2 different NLE's working simultaneously either. It sure would be easier if you could import your audio from Reason to Premiere ? Why can't you have reason convert the desireed audio track to a .wav, save this then import to Premiere, trim in timeline to get it lined up the way you want it? |
