comment A USB device with 5 microphone inputs: Is that possible?
I have a setup (running under Linux, but that shouldn't matter) where I record 4 channels split across two USB sound cards. To keep the cards in sync, I use an SPDIF cable from the output of one card into the input of another. The sound cards are "Sabrent USB-SND8 8-Channel USB 2.0 External 7.1 Sound Box". (For the Linux Techies: I use ALSA on the machine to combine the two physical stereo inputs on the sound cards into 1 logical quad input, and then I record that quad channel.)

comment Individual performing complete band performance (eg rock) by sequentially recording each instrument
This would probably make a good question.... I think of the rhythm and melody as being the structure on which everything else hangs. It's probably just my classical music background.

comment How to achieve best sound in MIDI playback
The SB Live 5.1 could take something like 8 Meg of samples, which could be broken into several banks. The other cool thing was you could drive the output all the way up without distortion, something a lot of other cards couldn't do. You can still pick them up for around $10 on ebay these days.

Some of the cards (e.g. Sound Blaster Live) actually use samples for MIDI playback. These can actually sound quite good if you get a good sample set (Sound font).
