Connecting the iRig mic to a mixer or microphone input Keep in mind that the Apple audio input ports are line-level, and PCs generally use SoundBlaster-style plug-in power TRS ports. So you need to find out what level the iRig outputs and then figure out how to match it with your mac or PC. |

Sustain pedal in a MIDI file Pedantic, but relevant to this question: A MIDI file is not just notes, it also can include controller data, which is relevant to the OP's question. |

Sustain pedal in a MIDI file Reaper should do the job. You can download it for free and should be able to examine your MIDI file with it. |

Novation Launchpad as drum pads? The launchpad buttons are very stiff and not velocity sensitive, so you might want to look at one of the drum-oriented pad controllers. However, the launchpad is better than a computer keyboard. |

Synthesizer resources It isn't a good question. According to the FAQ: You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face. Chatty, open-ended questions diminish the usefulness of our site and push other questions off the front page. |

How do DVDs avoid the blockyness that plagues dark scenes in most video files? The effect happens everywhere, but the human vision system detects differences in black shading before it detects differences in colors. It is also possible that your display's Gamma curve is set such that it exaggerates small differences in black level. |

How do DVDs avoid the blockyness that plagues dark scenes in most video files? Strictly speaking, ripping is the process of pulling data off the disc. If the video ends up in another codec, you have been transcoding the video as well. Transcoding is the likely source of the blockiness. |

How do DVDs avoid the blockyness that plagues dark scenes in most video files? Overcompression isn't a binary thing. If you pull off the original file and never transcode it, the video quality won't change. You are either transcoding the video to a codec with similar quality settings (causing mild degradation) or turning up the compression. |

Are there any non-weighted key MIDI controllers out there with 76 - 88 keys? There are a ton of options. Just do a daily search for "synth*" in the music section of your local craigslist. Then do some research on the keyboards that come up in your price list until something with the features you want arrives. I wouldn't suggest that you focus too much on the EX5, I bought mine because it was a cheap way to get at VL synthesis. And I ended up with an excellent 76-key keyboard for free. |

Are there any non-weighted key MIDI controllers out there with 76 - 88 keys? I see that the EX5 in question has the sought-after SCSI board installed. Often that is listed for $300+ on eBay. Despite the fact that it is the same card included in the A3000 sampler, which regularly sells for well under $200. |

Are there any non-weighted key MIDI controllers out there with 76 - 88 keys? I haven't used the PC-800, so I can't tell you much about it. I've also never seen one in person. You've got to be careful with eBay buy-it-now prices. An EX5 for $800 is a pipedream, and that seller even refuses to ship it without returning the shipping case. Watch eBay for a few weeks, and you will see actual auctions and buy-it-nows with more reasonable prices. |

Is it a good idea to use headphones for audio production? As soon as you know the rules, it is time to start breaking them... But be careful with your ears, you can't replace those for $10! |

Is it a good idea to use headphones for audio production? Sony 7506 is the standard headphone around the world. They aren't amazing, but everyone has at least one pair. Sennheisers, AKGs and other premium brands can be nice, but it is worth having a pair of Sonys so that you know what everyone else is hearing. Take Gearslutz with a grain of salt. There is good information there, but there is a lot of focus on technology for technology's sake. Beginners should proceed with caution. |

Is it a good idea to use headphones for audio production? I try to avoid in-ear buds when creating music. It is much easier to accidentally overload your ears with those things, and you can't slide them half off your ears when needed. Great for listening, though! |

Complete song master and mixing tutorial just hit record for four minutes and thirty three seconds, and you are done! License fees to be paid to the estate of John Cage. But seriously, this is a really big topic. Can you narrow your question down somewhat? |

What software do I need to convert a DVD to common formats? And what are the recommended formats? Do you really want to distribute videos to your customers? Would it be possible to upload the videos to youtube instead? That way, the videos can help your existing customers as well as people considering your product. And it costs you nothing. |
