comment what hardware can I use to connect a Laserdisc player to my laptop?
The DVL-9 may have a high quality composite decoding system, so I wouldn't completely give up on S-Video. You won't really know until you try it, and S-Video input shouldn't increase your cost much.

I edited your question for clarity to draw focus that you want to know how to achieve a particular style, not just how to compress in general.

comment Tascam DR-40 for Lecture and Speeches?
On one hand, none of the portable recorders have built-in shotgun mics, so you are going to have to deal with cardioids or omnis no matter what you get. On the other hand, just about everything supports 24bit which gives you a TON of headroom for gain in post. Remember that each bit doubles your resolution. If your goal is to produce a 16bit mp3, you are throwing away 8bits of resolution when you normalize anyway. So if your levels are low, you are just throwing out unused headroom.

At this point, I would contact KRK support. I think you have more than enough information for them to help you.

What does your spectrum analyzer look like while you are sweeping the sine wave? At 50Hz, you should see a single narrow peak at 50 Hz. Based on what you are describing, around 120-140Hz you are probably seeing something more like a mountain range. Also, is the peak in this distorted range much higher or lower than at other frequencies?

comment RG6 vs RG59 HD-SDI cables for live stream
When considering costs, don't forget to consider the cost of testing out various solutions, replacing 'cheap' cable with better cable, etc. Also factor in the labor cost of running 900' of cable. Taken as a percentage of your total cost rather than an absolute value, the upgrade to better cable may be more palatable.
