What causes a buzzing that goes away when I touch the jack? @leftaroundabout, +1 thanks for the explanation and the suggestions. I'll check out the bass's wiring and see if I can't fix it. |

How do I mute my monitors while leaving headphones on? @cbarg, thanks. It appears that a system upgrade has fixed the latency issues. I think I can still set up a zero-latency monitoring configuration by routing my recorded channels directly to the mixer; my experience was that the latency only affected channels being monitored through Cubase (I know, strange). At any rate, I think this particular question is resolved. +1 for the extra help. |

How do I mute my monitors while leaving headphones on? Pending some further research, I think the Samson SM-10 does everything I want. The trick is the switch that allows you to select what goes to the phones mix, which can be Main or Monitor (as well as FX for the aux channel and "Mix B" which lets you hear the muted channels). If I'm reading the manual right (unfortunately I couldn't find a block diagram), this will enable all kinds of configurations of interest with a clean workflow. |

How do I mute my monitors while leaving headphones on? I'm using Cubase. I was having problems with high latency, so I needed a direct monitoring configuration to work around this. I will find out today if a system upgrade fixes this, but I think the problem remains. I just want to control the speaker and headphones level separately. |

How do I mute my monitors while leaving headphones on? Thanks for the reply. Can you give me an example of a "small" mixer that has such a feature? I was looking for a rack unit, but I'm pretty sure I've checked all of those. I did look at the Mackie Big Knob, but as you mention it doesn't do any mixing at all. |

How do I mute my monitors while leaving headphones on? I'm using the (discontinued) ART TubeFire 8, which has notoriously bad monitoring options. In any case, I need more than just the output from the interface, as I also monitor audio from MIDI devices. |

Should I ever use a bit depth less than 24 bits? I mean the bit depth of your analog-to-digital conversion. Some (older) hardware is limited to 16-bit output. |

Good books for beginning audio production? Can we improve this question and get it reopened? Let's assume the OP means basic sound engineering: signal flow and processing, levels, routing, mixing, etc. There are so many bad books on this subject that some recommendations from the community would be extremely valuable. |
