comment Can you buy Pro-Tools standalone? (software only)
+1 Accepted! "you get the flexibility of using the software with practically any audio interface you already have or want." - Great news I'll check to see if my device supports ASIO and Core Audio. Any thoughts on MIDI? I would have thought it would be easier to support MIDI for most devices owing to the low bit rate and simpler standard. I have looked at prices and they vary - it seems that there are cheaper packages when bundled but not sure if same Pro Tools version, also there is a HD version so would need to figure out these. The free trial recommendation is a great suggestion.

Thanks @ObscureRoot. Actually the Tascam was the right decision for me as I need to get other audio inputs into the Mac as well as SPDIF. The Tascam has multiple inputs. If I use the mac audio jack in for just spdif then I would have no available inputs for the other stuff.

Had I waited longer and seen your answer (thanks) I would have probably got a M-Audio MIDI interface and maybe your M-Audio CO2 for the coaxial to optical. Also there are cheaper coaxial to optical converters available about 10$/10pounds on amazon and ebay (but your suggestion is worth considering from a known brand). The Tascam is powered by USB so that is a redeeming feature for me spending the extra cash on it. :)

If I searched for TOSLINK to mini TOSLINK cables then this would fit the Mac's jack input that doubles as analogue 3.5" in and optical in.

Thanks. +1 and accepted (even though I now have the Tascam - see my other answer - this does MIDI which I needed as well.) Question: Will conventional standard optical SPDIF fit in the small jack input of the Mac Book Pro?
