The area of synthesis that's closest to the formulas you posted is additive synthesis. Before I get into some sounds, one useful way to break up the formulas is into a waveform and an envelope. For example, in the following formula you posted, the waveform is the sin() part, and the envelope is the combination of exp() functions: f(t) = sin(2*pi*t*f) * ...

That is simply a backwards reverb effect - added post production. To get it you used to play the recording backwards through the reverb unit, record the output, and then play the track forwards again. With a modern DAW, it is as easy as selecting the section of the track you wish to use backwards reverb on and set the parameters. In this case the mix is ...

The two things that come immediately to mind are that you should look at photography and sketches of 19th century London, and you should listen to any audio material you can find from cities that are at about that level of technological development. Photography and sketches will help you determine what noise-creating objects you need to simulate. It is safe ...

You are required to gain clearance, otherwise the owner of that sample could demand payment from you. From this useful article on emusician.com: Sampling potentially violates the law regarding two separate copyrights, the copyright of the musical composition (the PA Copyright) and the copyright of the sound recording (SR Copyright). You need to ...

It is definitely possible that the quality is degraded. All parts of the recording chain have some upper limit on the frequency range they can handle properly. On high-end turntables, this may well exceed the audible range by quite a lot and therefore not matter, but if it was digitalised at 44.1 kHz (which it almost certainly was, if it came back as a ...

Well, that was fun! It's actually a pretty complex piece of synthesizer work--the link ObscureRobot posted in the comments sheds some light on this. Since the music isn't exactly metered, I didn't bother to attempt to quantify that in transcription (I didn't bother to typeset it either, that would've been more trouble than it's worth). So, I used spatial ...

He uses software and hardware synths - including his main one, the FM8. Some speculation on the dubstep forum that he uses Guitar Rig for some distortion effects. To be honest this is probably the best source for information: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass - a plethora of links, tutorials and discussion.

Actually, you're mostly doing it right, that's how many of us chiptune artists learn to do it: by messing around. Another thing you may want to try is using a tracker like Famitracker (or even a sample-based tracker like Milkytracker), and just creating sound effects with notes. Then add tracker effects to the notes.

Simple way and free way to "suggest" a Doppler effect. The two most significant factors that get this effect are point source position changing and a slight pitch shift. These can easily be done by panning the sound and dropping the pitch at the appropriate time--use you ears to determine the best mix. Yes, you can make this more sophisticated by adding ...

Yes. Waves plugins have this: http://www.waves.com/Content.aspx?id=244 Ive used it a few times and it sounds ok but it is not free however. Also Cakewalk sell this: http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=36-CWSF3.31-10E and it has a doppler as part of the surround package. Some free ones: ...

Another option would be to ask those artists where they found those royalty-free samples. Though there are sample collections that are sold on CD or DVD, there are also repositories of sound bites and samples that are in the public domain. One excellent source is the Prelinger Archives. Another is freesound.org.

From the individuals I know in this space, I understand there is an element of side-chaining which is utilised in many high end games, but apparently an equally important aspect is in composing your score to include multiple paths: I haven't got the right terminology for this, but effectively what they do is use side-chaining to reduce the volume of the ...

Interesting reading on the subject: LucasArts patented the iMUSE (Interactive MUsic Streaming Engine) in the early 90s, which was a (genius) musical system that transitioned between music as the player transitioned between scenes. Essentially, when the player chose to move from one scene to another, certain instruments would fade out, and new ones (with a ...

A "physical device that is pre-programmed with the sounds of my choice" is called a sampler and what kind you'll need is entirely up to your personal requirements. They can be quite simple things that basically just play back short recordings when you press a button, all the way up to very elaborate devices that you can compose entire albums with. I ...

A solution that might work for you would be to use a combination of hardware controller with software to generate the sound effects. The controller would look something like this: Many people use Ableton Live for just what you are trying to do. There are several hardware controllers that will work with it. A few can be found here. I have never used ...

I think you may be misunderstanding the usual split, which is between low and high pitched sounds. The bass speakers play the low notes and the tweeters play the high ones. Loud is not opposite to deep. You can have loud low or high notes, or quiet low or high notes. To answer your identification question - low pitched notes will have only a few waves, ...

Audio effects could be considered a smaller part of audio synthesis. A quick google search got me this, which seems like a good start for recording special effects. The main problem is that there are zillions of ways of creating sound effects, it depends if you want to record or synthesize the sound. When I got started with music production SFX was my ...

Okay, now that you have updated your question I think we may be able to answer your questions better... But keep in mind this could have been done 100 ways and we are simply hypothesizing on how it could have been done. The individual letters coming in like this could be done 100 different ways, it could be done via an effect in aftereffects, a preset in ...

Well, I am using the updated version (Adobe Audition) but many of these features remain in Cool Edit Pro. For this, I would use the "Stretch and Pitch" process. Select what you're trying to extend, and go to the "Effects" menu (may have a different title for you). Select "Stretch and Pitch" under the "Time and Pitch" category. There, you will have several ...

Shazam (and various others) do this for entire songs. This paper describes how: Beforehand, Shazam fingerprints a comprehensive catalog of music, and stores the fingerprints in a database. A user “tags” a song they hear, which fingerprints a 10 second sample of audio. The Shazam app uploads the fingerprint to Shazam’s service, which runs a search for a ...
