First, I think we should probably address the concept of volume. The level of a signal has nothing to do with volume. You don't have volume until it is actually put through speakers and you are a hearing it a certain distance from those speakers. Instead you have a "level". The level is a measure of signal strength and it isn't subjective, but rather ...

Reaper is a DAW for PC or Mac which will allow you to record as many tracks as your interface will allow. It comes with many standard effects and supports VST plugins as well. It supports just about any routing configuration you can think up. It also has an excellent "how to" manual to get you started with recording in Reaper. Reaper's project and track ...

If you're on a Mac you can use Skype + Rogue Amoeba's Audio HiJack Pro + GarageBand to pull together some great sounding podcasts without breaking the bank. You can use Audio HiJack Pro to record your Skype conversations in GarageBand. It'll let you route the Skype audio to a track in GarageBand. Once your conversation is in GarageBand you can splice it up, ...

One word: Normalization. Normalization is the process of finding the loudest part of a recording and making it reach the 0 dB level so the loudest part of your recording is as loud as technically corret. In general, the standard for the highest volume of a recording is defined as 0 dB. Everything which is not as loud will be mentioned as something with a ...

Here is an incredible resource for your situation. Although it's centered on Podcasting, it really overlaps with your situation: Podcasting Legal Guide Here is the section on licenses you will need to be legal. This is very verbose, so I am linking instead of transferring it verbatim: Licenses you will need. And here is the section dealing with why you'd ...

I currently do a few podcast and have some input on your workflow. 1) You have your high-pass and low-pass terminology backwards. A high-pass filter cuts low frequencies, a low-pass filter cuts high frequencies. Not a big deal, just remember that "low-pass" is only letting the lows pass, and blocking (filtering) everything else. 11 kHz is far, far too ...

In the production chain that you can control, your final audio level is called programme level, as far as I know. There are recommendations for television (at least in Europe) that the programme level should not exceed -9 dB, with exceptions. But for web videos there is no such regulation. As a result you often have to readjust your loud speaker's volume ...

While Wordpress itself does a lot of RSS side of things. We use the podpress plugin to wordpress to make the updating of iTunes and tracking of downloads easy. It just makes management that much easier.. Also if you're on a Mac, I have a automator workflow to compress, add the tags and upload the files to the remote server. I will try to clean it up and ...

There are a few things to consider... The main question is whether or not you will be live streaming, or simply recording--the answer will determine which path you will go down. The podcast recording scenario is the simplest when considering how to capture the Skype feed. There is a Skype add-on app called Pamela Call Recorder that can capture and record ...

You are definitely on the right basic track with the setups you have suggested! I have a few more suggestions that will hopefully be enough to narrow down your choices and get the best sound for your money. Regarding your cheap proposal: A "USB mic" is just a mic with a USB audio interface built into it. So if you're already going to have a separate ...

You appear to be trying to do both a produced podcast with individually recorded tracks with live broadcast features. Unless you have big budget and manage multi-tasking I would avoid doing both. In order to play out Intros/outros, calls, liners and ads, you need a soundboard. Ambrosia SW make one for the Mac and the iPad ...

Just one suggestion, try to get clean audio as much as possible and then Normalize/Amplify your sound before any of the hi-pass low-pass and filtering adjustments. This will eliminate the tiny, computerised sound that over process and re-processing cause. In other words, do steps 4-8 before 9. Try using a stage mic (dynamic) over a studio mic (condenser) ...

A "physical device that is pre-programmed with the sounds of my choice" is called a sampler and what kind you'll need is entirely up to your personal requirements. They can be quite simple things that basically just play back short recordings when you press a button, all the way up to very elaborate devices that you can compose entire albums with. I ...

A solution that might work for you would be to use a combination of hardware controller with software to generate the sound effects. The controller would look something like this: Many people use Ableton Live for just what you are trying to do. There are several hardware controllers that will work with it. A few can be found here. I have never used ...

I wouldn't recommend either. The Behringer only sends 2 channels to the computer, and the Quattro doesn't have drivers for anything past Windows XP (with no mention of 64 bit). From my past experience with trying to do things "on the cheap" I've found that you need to very careful what you buy. Make sure you are not going to have to buy another one in six ...

Match two sounds with a level of certainty Similar post, but the conclustion was that while the technology exists, it is mainly used to confirm what a song is etc...but you could for sure look into the Shazam or Soundhound APIs to see if you can create a code/script that would do it for you However if the song, has a point in which the song is literally ...

You need something called a telephone hybrid. It's a hardware box you connect the telephone lines through and has the option to "hijack" the line so you can record the audio from the (real) phone. This takes care of feed-back problems and so forth, and you connect it to the mixer with ordinary cables. They come in many variants and for different regions, ...

Don't try to do this with your mixer, the callers will get bad echos of themselves and have a hard time talking. Instead, either use Skype's built in conferencing combined with SkypeOut to connect to POTS numbers. Or use another conference bridge service and PC based VoIP client. It should be easy to record the conference once you've brought it in to your ...

Okay, after a long period of troubleshooting, I determined it was the MP3 file that was having issues. After importing it into GarageBand and exporting it from there, it finally worked! I received the MP3 file from the client. He is a preacher and they recorded it at the church. Then he uploaded it to Google Drive and I downloaded it from there. It sounds ...

Assuming that the mp3 still plays locally, one potential solution might be to re-encode the file. If the software that your client used did not encode the mp3 file with the meta information that iTunes requires, this discrepancy could be creating the problem. I would recommend using a program like this for re-encoding: ...

I have the 1204USB for a while a ended up throwing out the USB adapter and getting a Saffire PRO 24 Firewire interface. This mixer and the 1202 are great but if I had the chance I would have gotten the Mackie Onyx 1220i which has the Firewire built in. However I did manage to make the mix minus work with this desk. You need to listen and monitor from the ...

Reaper is awesome, but you should not discount Pro Tools, which now is unified and works with any compliant hardware (not just Digi/MAudio). There is a reason why it's the industry standard among professionals. For you application as you've stated it, there are many DAWs that will fit the bill, including the aforementioned Reaper, but for broadcast recording ...

Why don't you do the music as a post.. Then you can just add the music track in the background and make it 'Duck' behind the voices. And if you really need the music to keep the tempo of the podcast conversation, you can just have it play on another device (iPod) and have it mixed into just the headphones, but not record it at all.. Or am I missing ...
