I don't understand what you mean by "changing a single sample". As you may know, samples are 16 or 24 bit long strings that describe the particular sample, but the file format won't comply to this as easy.
AIFF and WAV are both lossless formats, in Pulse Code Modulation (also referred as Linear Pulse Code Modulation or LPCM due to the quantization ...

Almost any professional microphone will give you much better results than the built-in one that your laptop has. One issue is that you will not be able to connect a studio microphone directly into your PC (they typically have XLR connectors on them).
Here are two basic options you could choose between:
Buy a USB audio interface with microphone input and ...

The CME UF-series keyboards support a built-in MIDI-over-wireless system.
My first guess was the Rockband wireless keyboard. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to transmit MIDI data over its bluetooth connection.
If you are up for a DIY project, here are some instructions on building a wireless MIDI link using XBee radios. Should be able to fit inside the ...

I don't know how "Macish" it is, but Reaper is inexpensive, easy to use, and has an excellent guide called "Up and Running" (PDF) that will quickly get you started using it. It also has a free 30 day trial period so you can check it out properly.
I have used Audacity for recording, and found adding effects to be tedious. With reaper you simply add the ...

Pretty certainly yes to 1 here, this is an area where most PC laptop manufacturers apparently don't care for quality at all – namely, to answer 2, they tend to use the cheapest microphones and preamps available (it has little to do with software), which is IMO absolutely ok because 3. you should always use external microphones if you care for quality at all, ...

what are my options as far as hardware is concerned for connecting it to my Mac Pro?
There are actually a large number of products out there for interfacing instruments with your Mac. I'm a big fan of Apogee gear and the Apogee One is an excellent solution for a high quality audio interface for a Mac that's super stable and sounds great. The advantage ...

That particular one will work, no problem, per http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/can-i-use-motu-hardware-in-pro-tools-software
I recommend that unit as well. I've used many, and they have never let me down.

Try rtpMIDI from Tobais Erichsen to add a MIDI interface on your PC compatible with the OS X network MIDI interface.
MIDI sync should work just fine. My guess is that if it isn't, your external MIDI interface is dropping some messages (maybe due to a full buffer?), and you are losing some timing clock messages. I've seen this happen with many MIDI ...

I'd suggest seeking out a more directional mic than one with the cardoid-style pattern you're looking at now, possibly even a shotgun mic. (My first guess woud be to check out Audio-Technica mics, but that's just a guess.)
You'll also need an audio interface, and almost certainly one that has phantom power to feed the condenser microphone. The good news is ...

Audio monitoring is application dependent.
For example, when using Ableton Live all you have to do is to set up a channel using EXT.IN (or whatever input your using) and change the the monitoring from AUTO to ON.
Most application will have you change the monitoring of a specific channel to on - some of them you'll just need to 'arm' the track, which ...

As a fellow foley enthusiast i would highly recommend looking into a field recorder when you budget allow.
For foley, the benefit of field recorders is their portability. If you can take it anywhere you will begin recording everything, and you will end up with a library of sounds far more eclectic than you could achieve if you had to lug a laptop around.

I know it is expensive, but Logic Studio comes along with Soundtrack Pro. It's a great program allowing for powerful waveform editing.
I jumped straight into it and bought a video training from Lynda.com. It's not really the easiest editor after all but for the Mac I guess it's by far the best one. Most other stuff I've discovered always was about Midi and ...

Do you have Garage Band? It's really quite a powerful sequencer. If you don't have it, I believe it can be purchased through the Mac App Store for not much. I'm not sure if it fits what you mean by a sound editor though. If not, then I'd suggest you use Audacity as: a) it's free, and b) you know it already, having come from Linux.
Ardour would be the F/OSS ...

for reference and to build upon Ian's answer (I don't have the comment perk yet), I was using direct-in (mic) on a homebuilt PC with a realtek onboard chipset. As far as I know, mac pro also uses the realtek chipset.
Once you are hooked up, you will want to look into amp simulators. There are lots of free options which will work in garage band. They are ...

Those MOTU units are brilliant. We have loads of them running everything from HUI from our SSLs to MIDI Keyboard controllers.
You should be able to just select the desired ports in ProTools straight away. If any problems, you can use MIDI STUDIO on your mac os (sorry not sure if you are mac or win user) from within protools and do the setup graphically, ...

Depending on the functionality needed, Audacity (it's free) may do the trick. Otherwise, you might try Cubase (it's expensive depending on version).
Both can use your existing sound interface. If you want an easier (in my opinion) user interface, check into ProTools, but you will need to buy compatible hardware.

I suggest returning the Macbook Air and getting a Macbook with Firewire. USB interfaces will give you latency when monitoring the recording signal, unless you have one that allows for hardware monitoring. (Perhaps someone else can speak about this. My interface is supposed to have this, but I've never used the feature. I also don't know what will work with ...

I'm posting this because I just went through the same issue with OS X 10.7.5 on my macbook pro and my original MBox.
DoktorHauser above is correct. I was able to use the generic driver for original MBox on OS X Lion. download it from http://www.usb-audio.com/usb-audio_2.1.7.dmg and install.
I was then able to choose "MBox Demo" from System applet > Audio > ...

1st, make sure you don't have any equipment or 3rd party programs that interfere with the audio on your computer because, more often than not, it is a problem with that instead of the audio on the computer itself.
I actually asked a similar question (which is specific to your question) about a third party program messing with Ableton (same as with ...

I think your question is actually very misleading.
Some Windows based laptops have far superior sound to Macs, and some are much worse.
The thing Macs have is consistency, as Apple has control over the entire hardware, whereas there are a million different Windows laptops.
So for your 3 questions:
1 - not better generally, nor worse generally, just ...

You could create a droplet in compressor. Unfortunately, your options for destination folder are limited by this method to either source, desktop, cluster storage, or your movie folder. Since you don't want your watch folder endlessly copying movies, "source" is a bad choice, and you probably don't have cluster storage, so as long as you're ok with your ...

Avidemux should do the work.
Load File
Go to File -> Append and select File
To the left of the video window,
set video mode to Copy;
same for audio mode;
set format to MP4.
Go to File -> Save -> Video.

The GIMP has a GIF Animation Package that can convert MP4 to gif.
You can just use the Split Video into Frames function, which will split each frame into a layer in GIMP.
Then when you Save As, select .gif and choose Save as Animation.
Photoshop has a similar function, but I haven't used it for a while now.

Personally I have magical 8-bit, pooBoy2, peach, rebar, toad, triforce and ymVST. All of which I got for free.
However if you are serious about making chip music I wholeheartedly recommend getting yourself an old "grey brick" Gameboy and the Little Sound DJ (LSDJ) software. As it gives you full control over the soundchip and you can achieve some great ...

I have heard that UA was demonstrating the new Apollo interface using a Macbook Air with Thunderbolt, and an external Thunderbolt audio drive. This would be an amazing setup if it works like they say, however you'd have to wait for the Apollo to be officially released.
If not that route, I'd suggest the same as the above--take the Air back and get a laptop ...

@neilfein is correct in his comment. The mistake you have made is to set send to to be Xpand2. This should in fact be set to Oxygen 25. This is because Pro Tools needs to know where to receive input from, and where to send output to, in terms of your keyboard (i.e., it needs two-way communication).
In a USB-based keyboard, this doesn't really make ...

Logic Pro does not provide any way to enable the Caps Lock keyboard without using Caps Lock, unfortunately. However, on the Mac you can hook up multiple keyboards and only disable Caps Lock on your primary one, or you can try an ultra-compact USB-MIDI keyboard such as the Oxygen8 or Korg NanoKEY.
Also, if you just want to sequence a quick riff and don't ...

One way is to ask the people in the shop you intend to buy from.
Or (if you plan to buy online), narrow down to a list of potential cameras then ask again here with specific camera names.
Another idea is, if you have a compatible memory card, go to shop, ask to try the camera then shoot some video with your memory card in.
Then you can bring your memory ...

Ever since the fall of Visual Hub, there have been several generations of programs that have taken up the sourcecode and tried to remake the magic. Visual Hub was awesome at stitching files together, sad it no longer works. Film Redux was a fork of VisualHub, but has since been abandoned also. You can still download FilmRedux for free, however I can't get ...
