As some of you know, this field can get a bit subjective. I'll try to stay as focused as possible. Without going into many details, you should be looking into 2 things. the reaction of the compressor the colour that that reaction might add. By this i mean (and we'll have to look at analog gear for a second here): There are many types of compressors; ...

Best I've been able to come up with to this one (and I'm interested in a better answer here myself) is a GearSlutz thread on what (if anything) anyone is doing differently to master for streaming audio. The answer from Lupo is relevant and interesting. He suggests: Level is important. 'Hidden' overshots will be revealed through coding and decoding. ... ...

It will only affect the peaks, not the rest of the audio. Normalize. This will raise the level of the the whole audio clip to the specified level. The end result will be less variation ...

It's definitely bad if ultra-low frequencies take away a significant amount of the power from the rest of the mix. However, that only happens if they are in fact as loud, or louder. If these frequencies fit in principle well in your material (i.e. not just rumble, but nice rythmic sub-punch) you should not kill them completely, rather just push them well ...
