An XLR cable used with an adapter won't give you the audio quality that an all-XLR cable will. If audio quality is really important, I'd buy or borrow an external recorder that takes XLR cables directly. If this isn't an option, pick up an XLR to 1/8" adapter cable. I suggest taping the adapter to the camcorder so it doesn't move around much.

The 650D (Rebel T4i) does autofocus in video mode, but only with the STM lenses. Currently, there are only 2 STM lenses, a 40mm STM pancake and a 18-135mm STM. I haven't used them, but tests I've seen online show that they have decent autofocus in video mode, but still not up to par with an actual video camera.

As far as I know the Canon 650D is the only Canon DLSR that has full auto focus during video recording. Not sure about the face recognition though.
Do some research on it. If you really like the DSLR look then I think this is the camera for you... especially as you'll be able to use your 85mm and 35mm lenses.
I don't know too much about other camcorders ...

Use XLR cables to get the audio from the PA to your camcorder. To convert the balanced PA signal to the line signal, take a passive DI-box (aka DI-unit). They are not expensive. You'll get a solid one for less than 50$ by Amazon.

Your best bet is going to be to mix the input from multiple microphones. If you get a simple mixer, you can have them all combined and not have to match it up after the fact. You would just leave all microphones turned up and which ever one has someone talking would play through.

By aftermarket do you mean generic? I.e. a battery made by a company other than Canon?
To the best of my knowledge, generic batteries won't give you a charge reading in the camera. Only original batteries will. That's just the trade off you have to live with when choosing generic batteries.

Sounds to me like your 1/4" adapter is either faulty or the wrong connectivity. You have stereo inputs, you just need to ensure they are connected correctly.
Check to see whether a signal path is short circuited for one of the channels when you use the adapter, and get a different one if necessary.
