Alright, This is a big question and I understand that something like this might require a lot of explaining, but I really need to figure out how its done, I will link to the video which shows exact effect from 0:00 to 0:32 which I want to achieve:

Is this achievable in adobe after effects? Where do I start, what techniques are used to create this etc?

If you read the video description in youtube it says: tools: 3ds max / Krakatoa / fumefx / after effects So, no, only After Effects won't cut it. – Bart Arondson Feb 16 at 9:32
