I am looking for a good directional/omnidirectional mic that has good quality for under a hundred dollars. I want to use it for when I shoot video and for recording folio. I'm going to dub in the sound from the mic into the video. Any recommendations?

Are there mics that are neither directional nor omnidirectional? :) – Warrior Bob Jul 31 '11 at 17:10
You have to choose one. There can only be one – Colum Jul 31 '11 at 20:28
Sorry, I meant either/or. – daviesgeek Aug 1 '11 at 17:10

You have a couple of answers but, in general, we do not do product recommendations on this site. See: blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/11/qa-is-hard-lets-go-shopping. If you have a specific problem you are trying to solve, you might have a question about how to evaluate microphones to meet your needs, but I have to close this question as off topic. – Robert Cartaino Aug 2 '11 at 13:44
Ok, sorry about that. – daviesgeek Aug 2 '11 at 17:30

If you already have an audio interface with phantom power, I highly recommend the MXL condenser mics. The V63m is my general-purpose go-to microphone for pretty much everything these days, and is on Musician's Friend for $70 (including shockmount). I've also had good experiences with the MXL 990, which is available on Musician's Friend for $60, or you can get it in a bundle with the 991 (which I haven't tried) for $80.

I am not very good with sound stuff...what is an audio interface with phantom power? – daviesgeek Aug 1 '11 at 23:03
Phantom power is a 48 volts button often found on audio interface. With that button, you can activate microphone that need this to be "active". For a good condenser mics, I would also consider the Studio Project B1, for around 100$. – Jean-François Côté Aug 2 '11 at 10:01

I would suggest the Snowball microphone from Blue Microphone. I have it, and the sound quality is good. It has an omni-directional mode where it picks up sound equally in all directions. It is currently selling on Amazon.com for $61.13
